Dear Auntie,
Make no mistake; I love the BBC, I’ve worked for you all my life, you are the cultural force of the Nation. But why, oh why, do you persist in getting it wrong? ‘Look after the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves’ was what my mother taught me. You have squandered licence payers’ money before, but to demolish Television Centre is both wasteful & absurd. You demolish television history, television present and television future. They are THE best studios in the country – as the many shows having to find new homes are now discovering. Are you scared of having a studio base in London? Are you pandering to politics over practicality? It’s not too late to change your mind – a lady’s prerogative after all. Prove to us that there is still a will for the BBC to provide, as it always used to, the very best facilities to make the very best programmes in the world.
Yours affectionately,
Miriam Margolyes
